Is it Limber, Limbel or Lindbergh?

The story of: The Delicious Puerto Rican Icy Treat.

(A strange name for a very refreshing little icy treat)

A “Limber” pronounced lim-ber is a delicious frozen tropical juice Popsicle in a cup. They are made in a large variety of flavors: coconut, vanilla, pineapple, lime, tamarind, mango, passion fruit etc.

No spoon needed for this treat… you just squeeze the thin plastic cup and pop the icy treat up and savor the sweet refreshing goodness.

I have heard people in the states even call them by another slang name “Flips” as you flip them in your cup to savor and suck out the sweet cold fruit juice that gravitates to the bottom as it freezes.  This is the best way to eat them in my opinion.

So the story goes that the frozen treat was named in honor of Charles A. Lindbergh – the American aviator who made the first solo, non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean.  While making several tours around the Caribbean in the mid 1920’s, Lindbergh, made a stop in the small island of Puerto Rico!

There are several stories on how this tasty frozen treat ended up being named in honor of the then very famous pilot.  This is the most commonly known:  They say that when Lindbergh landed on the island of Puerto Rico it was so hot that one of the local vendors welcomed him with one of these cooling and refreshing icy tropical treats.  He quickly fell in love with them and consumed many as a way to stay cool. When asked the name of the treat the vendor quickly said it is called a “Limber” in his honor.  One can easily imagine that when the locals would say his last name “Lindbergh” it would have phonetically sounded like this, “Lim-ber.

The name stuck and today children of all ages from 2-102 still enjoy this Icy Puerto Rican Traditional Treat to beat the heat!

No importa cómo elijas llamarlo, te encantarán estas deliciosas golosinas heladas.

La historia de: El delicioso helado de Puerto Rico.

(Un nombre extraño para un pequeño, muy refrescante y sabroso helado)

Un Limber pronunciado “Lim-ber” es un delicioso jugo tropical congelado. Una Paleta frisada en una taza.
Se elaboran en una gran variedad de sabores: coco, vainilla, piña, lima, tamarindo, mango, fresa, kiwi, naranja, etc.

No se necesita cuchara para este sabroso helado… simplemente exprimes el delgado vaso de plástico y empujas suavemente hacia arriba y saboreas el dulce y refrescante helado.

He escuchado a personas en los Estados Unidos incluso llamarlos por otro apodo o nombre anglosajona  “Flips” porque sacas el helado y los devuelves al vasito de boca bajo, para saborear y chupar el jugo de fruta que gravita en el fondo a medida que se van congelando.  Esta es la mejor manera de comerlos en mi opinión.

El chisme va asi… la historia cuenta que el helado fue nombrado en honor a Charles A. Lindbergh, un aviador estadounidense que realizó el primer vuelo solitario sin escalas a través del Océano Atlántico. En otro viaje, a mediados de la década de 1920, Lindbergh, hizo una parada en la pequeña isla de Puerto Rico.

Hay varias historias sobre cómo este delicioso y congelado helado recibió el nombre en honor al entonces famoso e histórico piloto.
Este es el más conocido: según cuenta la historia… dicen que cuando Lindbergh aterrizó en la isla de Puerto Rico hacía tanto calor que uno de los vendedores locales lo recibió con una de estas sorpresas tropicales heladas y refrescantes. Él rápidamente se enamoró de ellos y consumió muchos como una forma de mantenerse fresco. Cuando se le preguntó el nombre del helado, el vendedor dijo rápidamente que se llama “Limber” en su honor. Uno puede imaginarse fácilmente que cuando los paisanos dijeran su apellido “Lindbergh” hubiera sonado fonéticamente de esta manera, “Limber”.

¡El nombre se ha quedado atascado y los niños de todas las edades desde el 2 hasta el 102 hoy en día aún disfrutan de este helado tradicional Puertorriqueño refrescante para combatir el calor!
